Adult Jail Chaplaincy Application Process
To be eligible to become a chaplain in the Hamilton County, Ohio jail facilities, individuals must be at least 21 years of age and successfully pass a criminal background check. NOTE: Those with a prior conviction are still eligible to apply. However, the Sheriff's Department will determine access and participation based on security concerns.
The steps to become a TJM chaplain:
- Complete application form online, complete with payment for class fees. Payment may be submitted online or via check. Fees are non-refundable unless applicant is not offered a spot in the training class for some reason.
- Successfully pass a criminal background check conducted through the Corrections Division of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department. (Alternative background checks will not be accepted.)
- Applicants will receive a letter eight to 10 weeks before the start of class with information about fees, class size and curriculum.
- Candidates must complete the 13-week class--including two mandatory classes: Role of the Chaplain and How to Deliver a Death Notification and Grief Notification-missing a maximum of two classes. After completion, all trainees receive a certificate from Transforming Jail Ministries. Click here to see the schedule for upcoming training classes.
- All successful trainees are considered for TJM chaplains. The application and training class are weighed, and potential chaplains are invited to an interview conducted from among TJM's CEO, a Board member, a current/former AJC team member and someone who has worked in the criminal justice system.
- Following the interview, a decision is made whether or not to invite the candidate to become a TJM chaplain. This decision is dynamic and based on the following:
- Current needs of the ministry
- Faithfulness and effectiveness of candidate
- Ministry balance of race, gender, theological slant and/or style
